The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) administers the certification and training for fuels industry professionals in Ontario under the Technical Safety and Standards Act, 2000.

Gas technicians must hold a TSSA‑issued Certification of Qualification to perform regulated work such as installing, maintaining, or altering equipment, devices or systems.

General certification requirements (all levels)

To receive a TSSA Gas Technician licence, candidates must:

  1. Complete an approved/accredited training program with a minimum of 75% in all theory and practical components.
  2. Score a minimum of 75% on the TSSA exam.
  3. Complete all licensing components within one year of program completion.
  4. Maintain 80% attendance in training courses.

Additional G.1 (Advanced) requirements

  1. Successfully pass the G.1 exam and program
  2. Maintain a valid G.2 Certificate of Qualification
  3. Obtain written confirmation of 4000 hours of G2 field experience which includes 500 hours on systems over 400,000 BTU/h under direct G1 supervision
