The National Payroll Institute offers the only payroll designations in Canada.

Payroll Compliance Practitioner

The Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation is the foundation for a successful career in payroll. Designation will help you gain an in-depth understanding of the legislative requirements to keep your organization compliant throughout the annual payroll cycle, and become part of a growing community of highly-engaged professionals.

This designation requires three core payroll courses, Introduction to Accounting transfer of credit, and one year of payroll work experience:

  • Payroll Compliance Legislation (PCL)
  • Payroll Fundamentals 1 (PF1)
  • Payroll Fundamentals 2 (PF2)
  • Introduction to Accounting (transfer of credit; offered at post-secondary institutions)
  • PCP Work Experience Requirement Application (WERA) (a minimum of one year work experience in payroll)

Certified Payroll Manager

The Certified Payroll Manager designation provides the management skills needed to advance your career in payroll management. New students must have at least two years of experience being responsible for an organization’s payroll function (obtained in the past five years), including being accountable to management for the accuracy of employee pay and all government statutory remittances, or equivalent experience.

Each student must submit a Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application and receive approval from the National Payroll Institute prior to enrolling in the Introduction to Payroll Management course. They must also already be a Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation holder.

This designation requires two core payroll courses and three transfer of credits:

  • Introduction to Payroll Management (IPM) (prerequisites: Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation and payroll experience)
  • Applied Payroll Management (APM) (prerequisites: Introduction to Payroll Management)
  • Organizational Behaviour Management (transfer of credit)
  • Managerial Accounting (transfer of credit)
  • Compensation & Benefits Management (transfer of credit)

Students must:

  • register with Conestoga College and pay the school's registration fee, and
  • register with the National Payroll Institute and pay the association's registration fee to receive their course materials and access the learning platform (Payroll Compliance Practitioner only). This must be done five business days before the start date of the course.
