About the program

This program is perfect for you if you have native or near-native fluency in both French and English and aim to do written translations from English to French in the work field.

Each course will assist you in becoming a qualified professional translator and give you a better understanding of the English-to-French translation process. You will explore areas of study essential to working as a translator.

Program information

All courses must be completed within 3 years of acceptance into the program.
Note: Admission to the program is required prior to registration for courses.

Admission requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.

Note re: admission requirements

  • Students must be able to receive instruction, respond and research in the English language
  • Applicants are advised that exceptional skills in written French are essential in the program.

Admission procedures

  • Submit a completed Conestoga College Program Application Form.
  • Submit proof of admission requirements.
  • Final selection is made following an assessment of the admission requirements.

Program outcomes

  • Apply proper grammatical constructions in translation of English to French documentation
  • Apply the transposition method in preparing English to French translation
  • Apply the modulation method to generate a change in the point of view of a translated message without altering meaning
  • Identify the differences in the literal and figurative meanings
  • Analyse difficulties that exist in translation as it applies to the lexical order of words
  • Identify false cognates in a French to English translation
  • Use technical and everyday vocabulary properly in translation of English to French documentation
