About the program

The Business - Finance program prepares students for entry-level careers in the financial services sector. Students will acquire a broad range of professional service and technical skills necessary for a variety of employment settings in all sectors of business and industry. This includes banks and other financial institutions, government offices, small businesses, and financial planning firms.

Graduates will have the skills to apply computer, communication and mathematical skills. They will also be prepared to employ financial planning and service techniques to support activities, including the maintenance, preparation and presentation of individuals' or organizations' financial documents and statements, and individuals' tax returns. In addition, graduates collaborate on several more complex functions, including financial analysis, planning and control.

Program information

All courses must be completed within 6 years of acceptance into the program.

Course fees to complete this program total approximately *$9,900.00.

*This is the estimated amount for domestic students and may differ if students take equivalent courses. Fees are paid when registering for each individual course and are subject to change each term.

Admission requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or 19 years of age or older with mature student status (See Mature Student definition for details).

  • Grade 12 compulsory English, C (60%) or (50%) or equivalent, OR Conestoga College Preparatory Communications (COMM1251), or equivalent min 60%

  • Grade 11 Mathematics, C (min 65%), M (U/C) (min 55%), or U (min 55%), or equivalent, OR Conestoga College Preparatory Mathematics (MATH1420 or MATH1375) min 60%.

Note re: admission requirements

  • If your transcripts are from outside of Canada, you will need to obtain a comprehensive course-by-course credential evaluation. You can use an approved provider of credential evaluation services such as ICAS or WES, or applicants can request a credential evaluation through the college using the Assessment of International Credentials for Admissions and Credit Transfer online form.

  • Applicants with transcripts from institutions where the language of instruction is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency. Please refer to English language requirements for details.

Program requirements

  • To effectively participate in this program, students must have reliable Internet access and a device that meets these requirements.
  • In addition to tuition and associated fees paid by the student to the College, there may be fees payable to professional associations for obtaining certain licenses/certifications which are highly valued by employers. We strongly encourage (although do not require) students to become involved with these professional associations. More information will be provided to you about these associations within your first week of attending the program.

Graduate opportunities

Graduates may find entry-level employment in the financial services sector including banks, trust and insurance companies, brokerage houses, and mutual fund/investment firms, as well as both large and privately owned financial service businesses. Graduates may choose to pursue further educational qualifications by completing an additional year of study to achieve the Ontario College Advanced Diploma in Business Administration – Finance and/or articulate into related degree programs.

Program outcomes

  • Process and maintain financial records in compliance with relevant policies, procedures and regulations for individuals and/or organizations.

  • Prepare and present financial information in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations for individuals and/or organizations.

  • Generate financial reports for individuals and/or organizations by applying financial mathematics and statistics.

  • Contribute to the development and the implementation of a financial plan to meet individuals’ and/or organizations’ needs and objectives.

  • Contribute to the development and the implementation of marketing strategies to promote financial products and services and to enhance customer service.

  • Develop and implement strategies to establish and maintain professional networking and business relationships in the finance sector.

  • Analyze, within a Canadian context, the impact of economic variables, legislation, ethics, technology and the environment on individuals’ and/or organizations’ operations.

  • Develop and implement ongoing strategies for personal and professional development, highlighting ethics, values and standards in the finance sector.
