Course description

This course will examine the losses that Indigenous people in Canada have faced from the impact of colonialism. Losses will be discussed such as loss of land base, loss of traditional Indigenous culture, loss of traditional Indigenous languages and the loss of traditional family structure. Agents of colonization such as the banning of ceremonies, imposed residential schools and inequitable child welfare practices dubbed as the “sixties scoop” will be discussed. Students will learn about the grieving process and how Indigenous people, have been journeying through the process of a collective grief. The course will examine how practices of Indigenous healing and wellness have been utilized as a response to collective grief.
