About the program

This program provides training for students in the commercial aspects of photography. The program content includes digital SLR camera techniques useful for photo-journalism and newspaper photography. Practical and theoretical instruction will prepare the student for work in advertising, product, industrial, public relations (wedding, group) photography as well as studies in portraiture. Students will also be exposed to computer practical digital imaging and the business aspects of photography.

All courses must be completed within 5 years of acceptance into the program.
Note: Admission to the program is required prior to registration for courses.

Admission requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.

Note re: admission requirements

  • Students must be able to receive instruction, respond and research in the English language.
  • Students should possess excellent writing/communication skills and a strong aptitude for detail work.
  • Students should be aware that excellent reading and comprehension skills are required for success in this program.

Admission procedures

  • Submit a completed Conestoga College Program Application Form.
  • Attach proof of Admission Requirements.
  • Final selection is made following an assessment of the admission requirements.

Program outcomes

  • Have a practical working knowledge of photography including medium and large format, and digital cameras.
  • Demonstrate the ability to produce a variety of effective photographic material for research, illustration and presentation purposes.
  • Use digital imaging to produce effective files for all types of media uses.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the business side of photography including job quoting, image management and studio marketing.
  • Learn camera and lighting techniques in a studio or on-location environment as it applies to commercial studio assignments.
  • Apply a practical knowledge of the handling, processing and printing of black and white materials.
