About the program

This part-time certificate program is designed to assist individuals who are interested in working as medical transcriptionists. It provides training in business computing, word processing, essentials of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and two courses in medical transcription. Students will transcribe and edit physician voice mail files with an emphasis on developing speed and accuracy.

Admission requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.

Note re: admission requirements

  • Students must be able to receive instruction, respond and research in the English language.

Admission procedures

  • Submit a completed Conestoga College Program Application Form.
  • Attach proof of Admission Requirements.
  • Final selection is made following an assessment of the admission requirements.

Program outcomes

  • Employ principles of medical terminology in transcribing and editing tapes.
  • Transcribe and edit tapes using correct format and English grammar.
  • Use advanced word processing features of in the transcription process.
  • Use medical terms correctly according to the context and purpose of the dictation.
  • Correctly and accurately transcribe medical documents of varying complexity and medical systems.
  • Recognize the process for editing voice recognition documents.
