About the program

The role of the personal support worker is evolving as it responds to trends towards increased community-based healthcare. Now, more than ever, there is a high demand for personal support workers who have enhanced knowledge and skills to assist people within their own homes. If you have graduated from a Personal Support Worker Program and are intrigued by the idea of developing your skills and abilities further, this program will be of interest to you. This certificate program, unique to colleges in Ontario, is geared towards personal support workers that are interested in advancing their knowledge, skills and abilities to assist individuals and families who are living within a community-based setting.
You will earn a certificate of achievement and gain enhanced training to further advance your knowledge and skills related to health and wellness promotion, chronic disease management and prevention, environmental health and safety, healthy aging and supportive care techniques and strategies. This program is delivered in an innovative mixed delivery format that combines the opportunity to learn in both state of the art learning spaces at Conestoga College as well as in the comfort of your own home through a highly interactive and engaging on-line learning environment. You will have the opportunity to learn through a variety of ways including experiential learning activities, case studies, group discussions, independent study and group projects

Program information

All courses must be completed within 2 years of acceptance into the program.
Note: Admission to the program is required prior to registration for courses.

Admission requirements

  • Valid Ontario Personal Support Worker Certificate.
  • Applicants with a Personal Support Worker or Health Care Aide certificate from a college outside of Ontario are required to complete the supplementary admissions package.

Note re: admission requirements

  • Students must be able to receive instruction, respond and research in the English language.

Admission procedures

  • Submit a completed Conestoga College Program Application Form.
  • Attach proof of Admission Requirements.
  • Final selection is made following an assessment of the admission requirements.

Program outcomes

  • Analyze the roles and responsibilities of the personal support worker within an interprofessional health care team to determine how they relate to providing safe and ethical care within a community based environment.
  • Examine the implications of population changes on the health care system.
  • Illustrate observational assessment, analysis and documentation skills to apply problem-solving strategies and critical thinking skills.
  • Develop enhanced communication skills to improve continuity of care and optimize safety of self and others with respect to accountability and team collaboration.
  • Examine evidence-informed strategies that promote individualized care, enhanced self-management and health and well-being in community-based settings.
